Angela Smith Taylor

Angela Marguerite Smith Taylor was educated in the Durham City Schools and received a diploma from Hillside High School as a member of the National Honor Society.  She received a Bachelor’s degree in Middle Grades Education (1994) and a Master’s degree in School Administration (2002) from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  She obtained a Master’s of Divinity degree from Duke Divinity School 2010 and was ordained an East Cedar Grove Missionary Baptist Association minister at Union Missionary Baptist Church, Durham, North Carolina in 2011. At Union Baptist Church, she serves as an Associate in Ministry, Chairperson of the Board of Christian Education, and member of the Strategy Team.

Angela began her professional career as a Middle Grades teacher (1994-2000) and served also as an English-as-a-Second-Language teacher (2003) for the Durham Public Schools.  Upon graduation from the Master’s program in Educational Leadership at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, she served as an Assistant Principal in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools (2001-2002) and in the Caswell County Schools (2003-2004).  In 2005, she taught reading remediation and tutored reading and writing at Durham Technical Community College.  She has contracted with Durham Public Schools to work with 1st and 2nd year beginning teachers and long-term substitute teaching. Currently, she is a preceptor and research assistant at Duke Divinity School. She also owns a private tutoring service, which serves public and private school children from 1st – 12th grades and college. Currently, she serves as an Executive Board member of the Mary V. Taylor Foundation, Inc.

Angela is married to Wesley Franklin Taylor and they have four sons, Jejuan, Stephan, Michael, and Dominic and four grandsons, one granddaughter, and one grandchild on the way.
